ICD-10-AM/ACHI Fifth Edition Mapping Tables

The term mapping refers to the process of finding an equivalent code between two classifications enabling interpretation of one classification in terms of another (National Coding Centre, Coding Matters, Vol. 2, No.4 April 1996). Mapping highlights differences between different versions of a classification, such as: deleted codes, new codes, expanded or more specific codes.

Mappings between classifications can be described as forward mappings or backward mappings

Forward mapping is where a code from a classification is mapped to a code in a more recent or more relevant classification, for example:

  • ICD-10 to ICD-10-AM First Edition
  • ICD-10-AM Fourth Edition to ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS Fifth Edition

Backward mapping is where a code from a new classification is mapped to a code in an older classification or previous version of a classification, for example:

  • ICD-10-AM First Edition to ICD-10
  • ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS Fifth Edition to ICD-10-AM Fourth Edition

Maps can be one-to-one maps or one-to-many maps

One-to-one map- a single ICD-10-AM Fourth Edition code maps to a single ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS Fifth Edition code.

One-to-many map– a single ICD-10-AM Fourth Edition code maps to more than one ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS Fifth Edition code.
